1978 - Our dad and t’ Rabbit

Our dad and t’ Rabbit

Our dad said, “No”, to daughter’s question,
“Another pet would cause congestion,
It surely must be obvious that
We haven’t room to swing a cat,
Or a rabbit, come to that!”

Daughters’ pleas, of course, prevailed,
To the pet shop we all trailed.
Fell in love with tiny bunny,
Chocolate ears and coffee tummy,
Our dad thinks he looks quite funny!

He’s rather sweet, we’re all agreed.
Next thing we know, she wants to breed.
Helpful friends a doe donated,
Told where more could be located,
Our Dad needs to be placated!

Our birthday book no longer shows
The family’s name, but pregnant does.
Each one is treated like a duchess
Dad says, “What I mind so much is
Building all these blasted hutched!”

They say that trouble comes in threes,
Or fours, or fives, with pets like these.
She’s on her way to her first show,
And off to Oldham we must go.
Says Dad “It’s cold up there, you know!”

Gone are Sundays in the Garden
Neighbour says “I beg your pardon,
But what are all these blooming weeds?”
Say we “They help with rabbits’ feed,
You just don’t understand their needs
